Overview

Rutabaga Cafe, nestled quietly at 23 Jackson St in Chattahoochee, FL, is a restaurant that embraces intimacy and farm-to-table freshness in equal measure. Housed in what feels like a quaint home, this spot offers a cozy, private dining experience with just nine tables divided among three small rooms. It’s the kind of place that invites calm conversation and attentive service, catering especially well to diners looking for a relaxed yet refined evening meal.

The menu at Rutabaga Cafe is distinctive, drawing inspiration from Southern classics with a contemporary twist. Signature dishes like the Shrimp and Grits and Red Velvet Chicken with Waffle showcase a balance of comfort and creativity. The shrimp options, including the Key Lime Shrimp and Honey Glazed Walnut Shrimp, highlight fresh, vibrant flavors that avoid excess sweetness while retaining richness. Rustically pleasing sides, such as Fried Green Tomatoes, Cornbread drizzled with honey, and inventive Rutabaga Fries, emphasize the cafe’s commitment to seasonal, farm-fresh ingredients.

The ambiance complements the culinary offerings. Guests often note the warmth and charm inherent in its home-like setting, making it ideal for intimate dinners or special occasions that require a quiet, personal atmosphere. The service is consistently praised; Cindy, a standout server, enhances the experience by providing thoughtful recommendations and attentive care, ensuring glasses stay full and extra helpings are readily offered. This level of hospitality adds a layer of welcome that feels genuine rather than scripted.

While the food quality receives almost universal acclaim—the steak dishes like the prime rib special and filet mignon with a blueberry balsamic glaze stand out for their precise cooking and bold seasonings—some diners have flagged the pace and operational quirks. Limited seating and a single server can sometimes result in longer waits, as well as occasional menu availability hiccups. These moments test patience but rarely overshadow the quality on the plate.

Rutabaga Cafe is not for those in a rush nor those seeking a bustling, high-volume environment. It’s a destination for food lovers who appreciate thoughtfully prepared Southern-inspired fare with a farm-to-table ethos. The blend of comforting classics and unexpected flavors, set within an intimate and quietly elegant space, makes it a gem worth discovering — especially for diners passing through Chattahoochee searching for a memorable meal paired with genuine hospitality.

Food was great, portion size was good. But...extremely expensive. Cindy (our server) was super nice. She kept out drinks full, and offered us extra honey cornbread when we ran out.

What a cute restaurant!! First when you pull up it looks like a house - that's because it is!! They are only open for dinner and only have 9 tables make a reservation to be safe, although we didn't and got right in. There are 3 tables to each room, great for privacy and an intimate meal. We got the little plate with Buffalo and blue cheese fried oysters. The flavor was so good! We also had key lime shrimp that was so good and not too sweet. We each ordered a meal and split it. I ordered the Filet Mignon with fried green tomatoes and shrimp, with vegetable medley and fried mashed potatoes. He ordered the red velvet chicken with greens and Mashed potatoes. Both meals came with a salad. The dressing was so good! You could tell it was fresh, the salad was also fresh, literally picked that day. The chicken was juicy, the steak cooked prefect with great flavor! If you are looking for a quaint restaurant, with awesome food and great service you should definitely come here!! I didn't even mention the service - but Cindi was the host and waitress, she was on point have great tips and suggestions and was easy to talk to. We will be back next time we come this way!

So I decided to accept my wife's offer for a father's day dinner and try the Rutabaga Cafe. The sign outside said cash only, not a good sign, and it only got more interesting from there... We walked in and waited a good 5 minutes before other patrons told us to sit where we liked. We sat down for about 5 more minutes and the only waitress took our drink order. About 10 minutes later, our drinks arrived, but 20 minutes in we still didn't have a menu. I ordered the special, Key lime shrimp, my wife had something called red velvet chicken and my daughter ordered shrimp and grits. At first we were told they were out of grits, then we were happy to learn they found some. I attempted to order a side of mushrooms and onions, but apparently they were out. How do you run out of that? When the food arrived everything was hot and looked good but I was missing something, shrimp. In place of it was a steak? I was told the shrimp were frozen and to keep the steak while they try to get my shrimp thawed and cooked. The steak was cooked medium and was tender and seasoned well. The shrimp and grits were good if a bit under-seasoned. I spent several years in New Orleans, so the bar on that is pretty high. The red velvet chicken was on the sweet side, not my preference, but was cooked well and my wife loved it. Eventually I did get my shrimp and they were good. In total we spent 1 hr and 45 minutes here and probably waited on something for an hour of that. All in all, the food was very good but I don't think I will be coming back any time soon.

What can I say about this little gem... A great place to grab a farm to table fare. I have eaten multiple items on the menu and they have been delicious each time. The wait is a little long but well worth it. If you're passing through Chattahoochee Florida, stopping for a bite, you will not be sore disappointed.
